Derborence - mountain lake formed by a landslide

Derborence

Derborence Lake, not far from Zion, was formed in the 18th century by a landslide. The valley of the same name, a wild beauty, is a nature reserve. It fascinates geologists and botanists and nature lovers.

In 1714 and 1749 years of rock masses detached from the formerly massive Scex Field, causing terrible landslides. This disaster is considered the devil's work, the massive renamed Diablerets. 100 meters high, the masses of rocks formed a reservoir that has long been considered cursed, so that the surrounding nature could develop freely.

Today, wild valley Derborence is protected, especially for single virgin forest that grew on the scree. It is accessible from Conthey by a small road. The writer Charles Ferdinand Ramuz Vaud was inspired by the landslide to write his novel Derborence.
